SOS Visual Playlist Editor 6.0 Release Notes

This document summarizes the changes and additions to the Science On a Sphere® (SOS) Visual Playlist Editor (VPLE) in the version 6.0.x releases.

The SOS Visual Playlist Editor 6.0.x requires the Ubuntu 22.04 operating system and SOS 6.0.x.

Upgraded the Visual Playlist Editor application to work on the latest long-term supported (LTS) version of the Ubuntu operating system, version 22.04. Please see the SOS 6.0 release notes for more information.

• Resolved issue where newer versions of the Visual Playlist Editor application would not be able to get installed on the machine during regular software updates.

• Resolved issue where the Visual Playlist Editor either would not start from the Desktop icon or it would take upwards of a minute to start. Note that as with previous versions, the first time you start this application after a reboot of the machine, it takes upwards of 12 seconds to load. After that, it should take only a few seconds.

• Video playback in the Preview Window is not stable. Please note that the following DO NOT affect video display & playback on the SOS spherical display:
  • The video playback for videos with sound is choppy and doesn’t always sync audio and video. Playback for videos without sound is OK.
  • Sometimes, when you open a dataset that contains a video, the video will not appear but all other elements will appear. In this case, go into the /home/sos/.cache folder (notice the dot before the word cache) and remove the directory gstreamer-1.0. Restart the Visual Playlist Editor and movies should appear in the Preview Window. Feel free to reach out to sos.support@noaa.gov if you need assistance with this.
