The Science On a Sphere® product suite is the collection of software and resources that are available from the NOAA SOS development team to all SOS and SOS Explorer® users.
This is the main application that is used to run SOS, called SOS Stream GUI. Without this, nothing else works!
The SOS Remote is an iPad app that presenters use to control the sphere during presentations, including dynamic layering and annotations. It can also be used for creating playlists and for sphere alignment.
The SOS Public Kiosk gives visitors control of SOS through a touchscreen that is installed near the sphere. Sites can customize the datasets and categories that are shown on the kiosk. The software runs on a separate Windows computer.
The Visual Playlist Editor is an application for assembling new content and creating playlists. A preview of the datasets in flat map form allows users to better understand how the content will be displayed on SOS.
Many of the parts of the SOS system can be localized for international locations including the Data Catalog, the Kiosk, the SOS Remote App, and the Visual Playlist Editor. Sites are responsible for doing the translations, though the SOS team can collaborate to distribute translations that are made available for others.
Projector alignment is the process that allows a dataset to be displayed by multiple projectors such that a dataset (an image or video) appears as one continuous image around the sphere.
The SOS Data Catalog contains over 500 datasets, including more than 50 real-time datasets. The catalog also contains Live Programs, which are presentations for docents created by NOAA and SOS users.
